Autumn Reflection

- Posted in Spiritual Reflections by

Autumn is one of my favorite times of the year, and this season truly reveals God's glory through the vibrant colors of the changing ,leaves, crisp air and the rhythm of the natural world.

As Divine artistry- scripture and tradition view the world as a "gallery " showcasing God's amazing work seen in majestic mountain peaks, shifting sunsets, powerful ocean waves and starry and moonlight nights. But God's ultimate crowning creation is humanity. And you and I are made in the image of God- a God who cares deeply for us. And despite our wounds, scars and brokenness, God is among us and travels the way with us through the roller-coaster of our daily lives- and as God promises each one of us - "I will never leave you or forsake." How reassuring is that.

May the Divine Spirit bless and keep you this day and always.

"Sacred Spaces"

- Posted in Spiritual Reflections by

I'm reminded of the "sacred spaces " we- here at Serenity are invited into every day. Somehow, we face the courage to face our own fears; courage to take us where others won't or can't go; strength of spirit to lead others and for the dedication to do our jobs well. We have genuine care for others who put their trust in us and compassion for those who need us. We carry them when they can't carry themselves. The work we do reminds us of the values that resonate across the many faith traditions and world views on compassion, generosity, service, hospitality and the care of others. Wishing peace and blessings and joy to you and your loved ones. Chaplain Dave

Reflection Psalm 23

"The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. " Psalm 23

Most of us have heard these comforting words. We say them at funerals and weddings and see them on Facebook pages.

The Psalm is only six verses long, and there's a reason it is among the most beloved of scripture passages. In just six short verses, it journeys through our human faith, our human joy, our human fear and doubts and our human desires.

"Yea, though I walk through the valley" whatever that valley is - we will walk through darkness. We walk through; we're not meant to camp there. David, the Psalmist, had walked that way himself and the words of the Psalms indicate that their writers knew times of loss and hardship.

Ultimately, Psalm 23 is a Psalm of life. Life is not always pleasant and good. But the Divine Spirit is not fear, death or despair. The Divine Spirit is the Spirit of life, hope, goodness and mercy that will follow us all the days of our lives.

Standing Together

Standing Together: A Reflection for Serenity Hospice Here at Serenity Hospice, we are blessed with an extraordinary staff—people who show up each day with compassion, skill, and a willingness to walk alongside others in some of life’s most sacred moments. Yet even with all that dedication, we’re not meant to do this work alone.

The majestic Redwood trees of California offer us a powerful reminder of this truth. These giants stand tall and steady, embodying quiet strength, resilience, and grace. But what makes them truly remarkable is not just their height—it’s their roots. Redwoods do not grow deep; instead, they grow wide, intertwining with the roots of the trees around them. They remain upright because they hold on to one another.

What a beautiful symbol of community, teamwork, and shared strength. At Serenity, we do the same. We lean on one another, support one another, and lock our “roots” together so we can carry out the work we’ve been called and equipped to do. Together, we provide the best care possible for all who are entrusted to us.

May we continue to stand tall, speak truth with gentleness, and lead with the quiet strength that comes from unity.

Peace and blessings, Chaplain Dave
